Natasha Chansa - The Genesis EP Vol. 1 Review

Princess Natasha Chansa - PNC - The Genesis EP Vol. 1.  REVIEW by Alfred

I first heard of Natasha Chansa in 2018 when she appeared along with Frazer Xongs on Era Black's 'Not here to kill' and on that song she raps "my tunnel vision is impeccable". As a keen follower of zed music, I've noticed that we are an industry starved of talent, even much worse, female talent. Over the years, I think only Wezi has dropped a project worth listening to. Scarlett has new album btw, go and stream it. The rest of the industry is one hit song, do shows and repeat with no respect for the art that comes into making an album.

So here comes Natasha Chansa burdening herself with the crown as Queen of the New Wave. It's not easy when you come in the industry with such galore of expectation. Over the 3 years that I've followed PNC, I won't lie, at certain points she has been underwhelming (OMG). It had me thinking "what if she is qualified but not eligible?"

So we have unpacked the Genesis EP to much euphoria and remember you only get one chance at a first impression. The great artists always make a great debut project, it's where you acquire for yourself a 'core' fanbase that believes in you and will support you throughout your career. So without further ado

1. Bayete - Everybody loves a grand entrance and this, this is as grandiose as it gets. This is what it must have felt like when Jesus entered Jerusalem riding an ass or when Shaka bathed and zolad cobra to go and take over Senzangakhona's throne. I love everything about this, the production is impressive, extremely impressive that it's one of the most theatrical beats I've heard from a Zambian producer. So we had Betrayal and Amsterdam and now we have Bayete as one of the best intro songs of all time.

2. Disciple - the beat is uptembo, I like it. "Enemies they really wanna see me lose, they be aiming but I got nothing to lose". Imagine going to a show so you can hate, she has nothing to lose mwana, you on the other hand burnt petrol. PNC says she is the real Jigga , I told ya'll Jigga is the GOAT you didn't believe. This chorus is crisp. Slap Dee is on, says he is the highest in the room, Kylie's baby daddy should come outside. Zambia ku chalo. That jerk off line from Slap Dee suggests he has been spending too much time in the wrong Hub. Overall quality verse from Mbama D. Third verse is nice. Best part about this song is the chorus.

3. Jungle - it's about to get wild (get it? As in jungle...wild arrh, I'm tough). That laughter, PNC on her Harley Quinn. The production here is noisy, I like it. Gives this a rock and roll vibe, I mean, that's wild. Good verses from PNC and Church. Last verse is great.

4. They Know - Lead single. PNC says yall eat what she spits, I mean it's fire stuff. Just a word of note, I'd drink Beyonce's bath water. Hmmm first verse has a nice flow switch up. We have a proper female rapper people, knows how to flow and kill beats. She says she is not killing but this beat is running out of breath. You are a liar Natasha, you killed the beat.

Cjayy!!!if there was a moment on this EP where it's not about Natasha, it's this one. Cjayy brought the fire. Such flow, he is like a surfer riding a strong wave, the new wave. Is it even allowed to be this good? Brian Maseka should make some arrests because this song is illegal. He said he is working for capital, the government looking for tax. The chemistry on the 3rd verse is what we call separation techniques because it has really separated the real from the fake (no pun intended). These 2 here are talented. I hope the industry is taking note. This is how you deliver a classic song, 3rd verse, such beauty.

5. Nenze lele - Angela Nyirenda vibes here, from one queen to another. If I am correct this song is a self realization song. For so long she was asleep, and now she has realized she is strong enough to take over the world and she will do it her way and not conform to people's rules or way of doing things. Sounds like a strong feminist message yeah? I love it.

Have I ever experienced a better debut? Maybe Martial's goal versus Liverpool. This is quality. We are in the New Wave! It is official. I have so much hope for the industry after this, I'm so inspired I might actually get back in studio you know.

Rating 4.5/5. I believe there is always room for improvement.

Carpe diem!
